The film unfolds gradually, prioritizing introspection and atmosphere over intense action. It's not ideal viewing when exhausted or seeking thrills; in fact, it might be quite relaxing. I’ve always appreciated Siobhan Finneran’s work, and she delivers here as well. Her portrayal is understated, likely due to the writing and direction. She embodies a woman held down by the religious group she's part of. Even when she expresses reservations, it feels like she's questioning her own convictions rather than challenging the tenets of their ancient-inspired faith. The actresses portraying her daughters are also very good. One fully accepts the teachings of the Jehovah’s Witnesses while the other challenges them, and they manage to maintain their bond despite this difference, except when circumstances demand otherwise. Beyond those central performances, the acting isn't particularly remarkable, but considering everyone seems committed to following a strict protocol, perhaps that was intentional. The actor playing the man hoping to marry one of the daughters appears to be going through the motions, though it’s possible he was instructed to do so. There was an opportunity for a powerful and dramatic scene when something terrible happened, but instead, the film chose to have someone simply remark afterward that they couldn't believe their sister would do such a thing, rather than depicting the event itself. This is a choice the script makes repeatedly in order to preserve the slow, melancholic mood.
