The concept of “aporia,” which describes a feeling of confusion or uncertainty, seems very fitting for this film from writer-director Jared Moshé. It’s a romantic science fiction story about Sophie (Judy Greer), a nurse whose engineer/physicist husband, Mal (Edi Gathegi), is killed by a drunk driver. The narrative then centers on her attempts to resurrect him with the help of his best friend and colleague, Jabir (Payman Maadi), also a scientist who was developing a time machine with Mal. While the device doesn't work as planned, it can still send a dangerous particle through time – one capable of causing death, potentially targeting the driver responsible for Mal’s demise. This sets up what appears to be a significant ethical problem, but Sophie consents, and soon she is reunited with her husband. However, altering the past has repercussions, many of which are unexpected and challenging. The movie does have an interesting idea at its core, though it's not entirely original, as similar themes were explored in “The Butterfly Effect” (2004). Furthermore, the film suffers from several shortcomings, including a sluggish pace, ethical discussions that feel drawn out, and a remarkably simple-looking time machine resembling one of Rube Goldberg’s creations. The most significant issue is the story's believability – not in terms of science, but regarding morality: It strains credulity to think these three supposedly smart people would be so unconcerned with their ethics when contemplating taking a life for personal gain. I struggle to accept that someone as caring as a nurse would readily agree to such an ill-conceived scheme; the storyline feels empty, fabricated, and simply unbelievable. And when attempts are made to atone for this action, the plot becomes increasingly convoluted. The underlying logic of this story really needs revision because currently it leaves thoughtful viewers deeply puzzled, particularly regarding why they chose to see it.
