Apex proves to be an unfortunate title for something that feels more like a low point. It's not just the newest installment, but also the most foolish take on the "Most Dangerous Game" storyline, where the people trying to hunt end up spending their time fighting each other while the person they’re supposed to be chasing simply watches them harm one another. The film presents conflicting accounts about this central figure as well, placing him in an undefined state somewhere between two extremes. Thomas Ernest Malone (Willis), also known as The Mutilator, has been found guilty of assault, fraud, wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, computer crime, robbery, arson, kidnapping, possession of illegal firearms, manslaughter, and “criminal activity.” Criminal activity? What else would it be? Hobbies? (It’s funny that both IMDb and All Movie mention "a crime he didn't commit"). Furthermore, Malone — who “developed a gambling problem and lost custody of his children,” which makes it sound like he wagered them on a losing bet— has “outstanding warrants in 47 states” (despite already being imprisoned), and his sentence is “life imprisonment without parole/117 years.” Really? On the other hand, we see a lengthy list of serious injuries and medical conditions including "two synthetic liver transplants" (the movie takes place just 20 minutes in the future) and "more than 60 concussions." His date of birth “cannot be verified”; that is, he has to be as old as Willis himself. This kind of inconsistency brings to mind Demolition Man. In that film, Wesley Snipes can't contain his excitement at the idea of having Jeffrey Dahmer among his team, not realizing that Dahmer would be completely ineffective in a physical fight with Sly Stallone. Similarly, it probably isn’t very entertaining or difficult to track down an injured older man who wouldn’t even pass a physical for the NFL. Yes, Malone may be "the toughest prey" they've ever encountered, and “The universe doesn't seem able to kill him,” but if that’s the case, wouldn’t it be faster and simpler to just restrain him, hang him upside down, and beat him like a piñata? But as I mentioned earlier, Malone is essentially an observer in his own film—or perhaps he’s meant to resemble his character from Unbreakable, which would at least explain his unusual ability to survive.
