Jerry (played by Jason Briggs), a writer just starting out, finds himself with an inexperienced agent—Danny DeVito—in New York City. His life takes a turn when he begins seeing a woman who lives outside of conventional morality (Christina Ricci). He then receives guidance from Dobel (Woody Allen), an established writer known for his expansive vocabulary, during walks through Central Park. Stockard Channing portrays the girl’s bothersome mother, and Jimmy Fallon makes a brief appearance. "Anything Else," released in 2003 and written and directed by Woody Allen, is a romantic comedy that relies heavily on dialogue and explores life's oddities while examining attraction and the influence of a young woman. Briggs does well as the main character, and I appreciated the dynamic between Jerry and his mentor, Dobel. Because Dobel uses unusual words, subtitles are helpful to follow along with him, alongside the understated humor that’s genuinely funny. It was also pleasant to see Erica Leerhsen in a smaller part. Christina looks wonderful and seems well-suited for her role, though her character's unconventional morals create internal conflicts. Her behavior is determined by whether she finds a romantic partner stimulating; however, she loses interest once someone becomes familiar. While the girl seeks novelty, Jerry tries to maintain their relationship—a difficult task considering her mother lives with them. This situation isn’t just irritating for Jerry but also for those watching. The movie's intention seems to be highlighting these frustrating people and relationships, and it is amusing to a degree; however, this ultimately makes the experience somewhat unpleasant. My feelings toward Jerry are limited because he chose to leave behind a perfectly good girlfriend (KaDee Strickland) in order to pursue an attractive but unfaithful woman. Essentially, he’s experiencing the consequences of his own choices. Despite these issues, the movie is clever, insightful, well-crafted and features strong performances. It's listed among Quentin Tarantino's 20 favorite films from 1992 to 2009. The film has a running time of 108 minutes and was filmed entirely in New York City. GRADE: B-
