I unexpectedly found myself liking this film quite a bit. Following what appeared to be a casual encounter, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) initially dislike each other intensely. However, fate intervenes, arranging for her sister's marriage to one of his closest friends. After some awkward encounters in a bar setting, they travel to Australia for the wedding. Her parents are pushing for her reconciliation with an ex-boyfriend named Jonathan (Darren Barnet), and another former girlfriend, Margaret (Charlee Fraser), is also present. Acting against their instincts, the two decide to feign a relationship to stir up jealousy in one person and shield the other from the interference of well-meaning but intrusive parents. The success of what follows hinges on believable chemistry between Sweeney and Powell, which I felt they delivered adequately. Bryan Brown contributes some amusing moments, there’s a scene reminiscent of Leonardo DiCaprio's work at the bow of a yacht, and the Sydney harbor rescue helicopter provides helpful assistance, all contributing to a plot that runs for an extended 1¾ hours – perhaps twenty minutes too long. The script is sharp and avoids relying on tired American or Australian clichés. It also incorporates some suggestive content, comic nudity, and a brand of adult humor that’s refreshing compared to the typical juvenile jokes we often see. While it's unlikely to stick with you for very long, it provides an agreeable mix of sunshine, ocean views, romance, and lightheartedness.
