John Chard on Any Which Way You Can

7/10 · Nov 17, 2019

This installment continues the story from Every Which Way But Loose in a familiar and enjoyable fashion. Buddy Van Horn directed Any Which Way You Can, with the screenplay by Stanford Sherman and Jeremy Joe Kronsberg. The cast includes Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, William Smith, and C.J. the Orangutan. Philo intends to quit bare-knuckle fighting, but when he’s pressured into another high-paying match by organized crime figures, he finds himself back in the ring. The Black Widows motorcycle gang remains determined to get revenge, Clyde the orangutan is still causing trouble, and Lynn Halsey-Taylor wants to mend her past actions that hurt Philo. As with its predecessor, this film embraces absurdity but delivers a genuinely entertaining experience. The story centers on Philo being pulled back into bare-knuckle fighting to face Jack Wilson (played exceptionally by Smith), the reigning champion of street brawling. Alongside this, there are attempts to repair relationships and heal emotional wounds. Clyde the orangutan provides plenty of comedic moments, while the climactic fight is skillfully presented and extended for maximum impact. A particularly amusing sequence involves simultaneous romantic pursuits—including one involving Clyde and a female orangutan—and surprisingly thoughtful writing that portrays the fighters as decent men rather than simply mindless individuals seeking money. It was another commercial success, demonstrating how audiences often just want to switch off their thinking and enjoy themselves. The film receives a rating of 7/10.
