Antlers didn't live up to expectations. The performances weren’t particularly strong; while Keri Russell managed an acceptable job, Jesse Plemons seemed unengaged and gave a weak portrayal. As a horror film, it failed to generate much in the way of genuine scares. There were some interesting visual ideas during the transformation sequences, but the creature itself was underwhelming because of its reliance on computer-generated imagery. Considering its R rating, I expected more gore; many of the violent moments felt abbreviated or occurred out of sight. Sometimes this technique can be effective when suspense has been established, however that wasn’t the case here and the impact suffered as a result. The narrative was commonplace and easy to anticipate, and the characters made choices that seemed nonsensical just to move things forward. All these problems are compounded by its uneven rhythm, making it an uncomfortable film to sit through. Score: 38% Verdict: Poor
