The narrative opens with striking beauty, but an encroaching sense of overwhelming sadness quickly emerges. This is a profoundly moving and emotionally intense movie, and the characters’ feelings manifest physically between them. A persistent feeling of pain settles in, which I suspect will linger for quite some time, largely because of the negative thoughts that repeatedly intrude upon the female characters' experiences. The performances by Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg are remarkable—I haven’t seen anything like them recently. Their portrayals are unsettling and challenging; at times, the sheer force of what’s happening on screen was so strong I needed to stop watching for a little while just to compose myself. I've never witnessed such harsh cruelty outside of a horror movie. It is truly an exceptional film that deserves far more attention.
