This is a moving and unsettling account from Czechoslovakia concerning World War II. The film recounts the factual events surrounding London’s dispatch of Czech operatives—played by Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan—to Prague in late 1941 with the goal of eliminating SS-General Reinhard Heydrich the following May. He was among the highest-ranking officials within Hitler's SS, often referred to as "The butcher of Prague," and a key figure in planning the Holocaust. The narrative combines elements of drama, suspense, wartime action, and tragedy. It deviates from conventional World War II films because it centers on a secret operation; its feel is closer to something like “Valkyrie” or even the fictionalized "The Eagle has Landed," both of which involve a confrontation at a church. There are also echoes of “Where Eagles Dare,” though without that film’s exaggerated style. Filming in genuine Czech Republic locations adds to the impact. The events portrayed genuinely occurred, and the consequences for the Czech people were severe, as shown. A prior adaptation of this story appeared 41 years ago, titled "Operation: Daybreak.” Both versions are worthwhile, but I feel this one is superior because it presents a more precise portrayal of the assassination attempt. Following an engaging start, there's a period of roughly 45 minutes where events seem fairly ordinary until the mission itself unfolds; after that point, you’ll be captivated. French Canadian Charlotte Le Bon portrays Marie and has since established herself as a skilled independent filmmaker, something demonstrated by “Falcon Lake,” a quiet coming-of-age story from 2022. The film's length is 2 hours and was filmed in the summer of 2015. GRADE: B+/A-
