I’ll admit, I wasn't familiar with the ‘Ant-Man’ comics before seeing this film, and I didn’t even realize Marvel had a superhero like him. (Though I do know about the Danish movie 'Antboy'.) I’m happy they brought this character to the big screen, and I’m confident he’ll be back in future ‘Avengers’ movies—they really seemed keen on gauging audience reaction with that promotion. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I think it’s a great addition. It's another example of CGI wizardry and Marvel’s ability to create spectacle. As long as they choose the right actors and filmmakers and have a solid story, these kinds of science fiction movies will continue to dominate theaters. The collaborative effort deserves recognition; the visuals were outstanding, as were the performances, even from the supporting characters. I was taken aback when Paul Rudd joined the project, though. I assumed it would be an action-packed sci-fi comedy, and I was mistaken. It turned out to be a straightforward story centered around a heist—it was enjoyable, certainly, but not really a comedy. The film gets off to a fantastic start, particularly for what is essentially the first installment in a series. A solid base is essential if you want to build something lasting, and I expect future films will only improve as they develop. Out of all the Marvel superhero movies, this one felt the most appropriate for families and younger viewers. It’s not without its moments of action, but from the name of the character to his presentation, everything had a relaxed feel that made it accessible to everyone. It was wonderful to see an actor like Michael Douglas involved in a modern film. Now I'm looking forward to seeing Evangeline Lily as Wasp-girl in the next one—it’ll be something akin to Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, but with a science fiction twist. The bonus material was quite interesting too; I enjoyed that as well. If you haven't seen it yet, don't go in expecting anything like Disney’s ‘Honey’ movies. Ultimately, if you appreciate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’ll likely enjoy this one as well—it’s the twelfth film in the franchise. 7.5/10
