The film centers around an older couple enjoying a tranquil and content existence. There's nothing particularly remarkable about them; they could easily be our own parents or grandparents. Their life is stable, quiet, and firmly rooted in years of companionship fostered by a loving marriage. It’s perhaps because of this that they become a source of support for friends and family facing difficult circumstances. After watching, I felt that addiction was a significant theme woven throughout the story; if you pay close attention, the people who seek refuge with this peaceful couple are clearly struggling with their own dependencies, which fuel anxieties and paranoia. Issues like alcohol abuse, inactivity, and excessive concern about appearance are habits they can’t shake, despite the couple's attempts to help them—and the way these troubled characters still manage to elicit our empathy. The writing is effective in exploring this, and while the film takes some time to develop, it ultimately becomes engaging, holding your attention with intelligence and a sense of realism that adds to its believability. Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen are deserving of recognition for their dedication to their roles, bringing them to life with physicality, nuance, voice, and personality. Both actors have demonstrated their talent previously, but their performances here are exceptional and truly enjoyable. I also appreciated the work of Oliver Maltman and Lesley Manville, who portray two other important characters in the narrative. Like many dramas that emphasize relationships between people, this film prioritizes a well-crafted script, thoughtful dialogue, and a strong ensemble cast. The technical aspects were understated but handled with discretion and practicality. The pacing is somewhat deliberate, though I suspect this was done on purpose.
