Manuel São Bento on Another Simple Favor

5/10 · Oct 22, 2025

I anticipated returning to the captivating and darkly humorous universe created by the first film when I began watching Another Simple Favor. Although it was nice to see these characters again, the strongest aspect of this movie is certainly the remarkable chemistry between Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. The comfort and energy they display together, exchanging sharp remarks and wary looks, demonstrates that both performers possess a greater range and depth than many people realize. They drive the narrative forward, convincingly portraying their complicated and unusual friendship against a stylish setting. Visually, the film is quite appealing, with the costume design being particularly noteworthy—the sheer opulence alone makes it worth seeing, even if it serves as a diversion from what’s lacking in other areas. Unfortunately, that initial excitement soon fades into frustration, mainly because of an abrupt and significant change in tone. The first movie managed to combine a shadowy, unsettling atmosphere with suspense; however, Another Simple Favor plunges directly into broad, unrestrained comedy that doesn't quite fit with the interesting premise. The story quickly becomes mired in a tangled plot filled with several superfluous and unengaging subplots, resulting in an ending that feels both protracted and strangely artificial in its presentation. A key moment is surprisingly jarring, utilizing either noticeably flawed green screen effects or unusually unrealistic lighting that makes the actual locations seem fabricated. Overall, I can’t honestly say I hated it or loved it; the film exists in a peculiar, unsatisfying space between those extremes. The initial mystery was an exceptional and unique occurrence that would have been better left undisturbed, and seeing that original remains the preferable choice. Rating: C
