Having spent decades in television, I was curious about what made this film so popular. It turns out these guys have simply stumbled upon something that those of us who’ve been around a bit already know – a small amount of alcohol, when handled carefully and regularly, can actually sharpen the mind. Really? These Danish educators decide their jobs—and their lives in general—could use a boost, so they begin what seems like a “scientific” study to see how their performance changes with increasing blood alcohol levels. The result is a very entertaining film featuring Mads Mikkelsen and his fellow actors really giving it their all as they test the boundaries of their new experiment, putting stress on almost every personal and professional connection in their quest for a better life. Like most successful dramas, the consequences of their rather careless actions are occasionally amplified, and the potential risks associated with their approach aren’t completely overlooked, but ultimately it's an uplifting film that does briefly consider the impact of alcoholism and addiction more broadly—though still remains a pleasant experience that brought back memories of a time when teamwork was common practice, something that has largely disappeared or moved online. I’m sure medical professionals could come up with plenty of reasons why this movie might be irresponsible or seen as celebrating alcohol consumption; however, it resonated with me and I believe the final scenes by the harbor are among the most delightful moments in cinema I've witnessed recently. Cheers!
