Anon presents itself as a noir science fiction thriller taking place not too far from now, centered on a world where every moment witnessed by a person is automatically documented and stored. This creates a society without any real personal space, but what if those recorded recollections could be changed? Detective Sal Frieland, portrayed by Clive Owen, investigates offenses by examining people's memories—recordings held within a digital system that allows access to these experiences. The investigation begins when an unidentified hacker is thought responsible for several deaths. Sal suspects a secretive woman (Amanda Seyfried) who manages to stay outside the established systems and has the ability to modify memory files. Director Andrew Niccol continues his exploration of future societies, similar to what he did in Gattaca. The film’s pace diminishes when Sal and this enigmatic woman begin a relationship. As Sal faces increasing danger, he discovers that even his own memories have been tampered with. However, the unfolding mystery feels somewhat familiar and lacks genuine surprise.
