It’s a good illustration of what cinema is capable of—a real shot in the arm. I tend to watch movies in phases. There can be long stretches where I don't see anything, sometimes nearly a year, because my life is generally pretty stable. But then there’s this recurring feeling, not exactly depression but more like a deep disconnect from what's happening around me. It's hard to describe, maybe just extreme tiredness. So I compile a list of 40 or 50 films and binge them, trying to get through two or three each day until I’ve seen them all. With each round, there are usually one or two that really hit hard and pull me out of it. Those truly special movies—the ones that feel original, charming, genuine, thoughtfully made—like 2001, Ikiru, Hannah and Her Sisters, City Lights, or Anomalisa—are what I need to get my spirit back on track. This film had a powerful effect on me.
