I’m delighted to be reviewing this film because I found it exceptionally well-crafted. It's a gorgeous exploration of disconnection and the feeling of existing outside of one’s body, depicting the isolation prevalent in modern life. 'Anomalisa' centers on Michael Stone, portrayed by David Thewlis, during a business trip, quickly revealing his deep loneliness. The film utilizes stop-motion animation with puppets, a technique selected to striking effect. Every character shares the same facial features—appearing almost like masks—and speaks in an identical, emotionless tone, except for the two central figures. This stylistic choice greatly enhances the depth and originality of the themes concerning identity and solitude. The monotony of Stone’s daily routine is disrupted when he overhears a guest at his hotel, which bears the fitting name The Fregoli—a reference to a psychological condition involving paranoia. This guest's voice belongs to Jennifer Jason Leigh, who becomes the sole contrasting sound in the film. Stone is captivated by her and immediately invites her back to his room, prompting her to sing for him while he listens with intense focus. A very explicit intimate encounter occurs that would be comical under different circumstances, but here it’s surprisingly poignant and lovely. I'll avoid discussing further plot points so as not to spoil the experience. 'Anomalisa' is a truly ingenious film from the same creative force behind ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,’ ‘Adaptation.’ and ‘Being John Malkovich,’ and that influence is evident. Every aspect of it feels meticulously executed. It’s disappointing that its only nomination at the Academy Awards was for 'Best Animated Feature,' alongside more conventional children's animated films, as it deserved broader recognition for its quality. ★★★★
