MGM’s Annie Get Your Gun is mainly directed by George Sidney, with a screenplay by Sidney Sheldon based on a book by Dorothy & Herbert Fields. The cast includes Betty Hutton, Howard Keel, Benay Venuta, Louis Calhern & J. Carrol Naish. Irving Berlin composed the music and Charles Rosher was in charge of photography; it’s presented in Technicolor. Inspired loosely by the life story of Annie Oakley, this movie followed the considerable success of the stage version that premiered in 1946. The narrative follows Hutton as Annie Oakley, a girl from a rural background, who after winning a shooting contest against Frank Butler (Keel), achieves worldwide recognition. However, her newfound fame brings challenges, especially because she develops feelings for Frank. This lively and vibrant musical encourages viewers to set aside historical accuracy and simply enjoy the experience. The film’s production was famously difficult; Judy Garland (originally cast as Annie) had to drop out due to health problems, Frank Morgan (Buffalo Bill) died, and George Sidney became the third director after Busby Berkeley and Charles Walters departed. Even with a new team in place, there were tensions on set, largely directed at Hutton for taking Garland’s place. Following its widespread success, a disagreement between MGM and Irving Berlin led to the film being withdrawn from distribution in 1973, remaining unseen until 2000. Fortunately, since then, both longtime fans and new musical enthusiasts have been able to appreciate this wonderful entertainment. Songs like "Doin' What Comes Natur’lly", "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun", "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "Anything you Can Do" are full of energy and joy, offering a bright spot even on gloomy days. Hutton is genuinely excellent in the lead role, bringing an enthusiasm to the part that contrasts with her difficult experiences behind the scenes. Her comic timing is also very good. 8/10
