Carol Burnett’s portrayal of the scheming, inattentive orphanage director ("Miss Hannigan") is a highlight; she clearly doesn't care about the children under her charge, treating them poorly while drinking, smoking, and generally acting out. Then "Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks" (Albert Finney), who has amassed an enormous fortune, makes the decision to let one of the orphans live with him at his home, and "Annie" (Aileen Quinn) is chosen for this special opportunity. She quickly wins over everyone – even the stern businessman. When he resolves to assist her in locating her parents by posting a reward, "Hannigan" realizes she can exploit the situation, recruiting her unreliable brother "Rooster" (Tim Curry) and his troubled girlfriend to pretend to be Annie’s parents, collect the money, and abduct her! The plot feels somewhat forced at times, although there are some enjoyable dance numbers like "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow" & "It's a Hard Knock Life," plus Geoffrey Holder is excellent as Warbucks’ imposing assistant, reminiscent of "Oddjob." Finney and Curry both fully commit to the film’s tone, and Quinn effectively portrays the title character’s mix of innocence and spirit.
