It’s past time to leave the demonic conduits behind. *** This review contains minor spoilers *** Even though James Wan isn't listed as director, it feels entirely like one of his movies. There’s a pattern developing with these newer horror filmmakers where they don’t realize that reusing the same concepts is, frankly, boring. Insidious, Dead Silence and The Conjuring have their detractors (and I am not among them; I enjoy all of those films), but they arrived at a moment when many horror fans were looking for something to connect with. Exploring the fear of dolls and demons had been absent for some time, certainly without any real conviction, which was great news for audiences. Annabelle branches off from The Conjuring and Dead Silence somewhat, but ultimately feels like an uninspired attempt to make money. The doll is a creepy sight (and quite different from the actual Rag-Dolly-Anna), but it’s all rather deceptive; those involved have resorted to another demonic entity, only Red Darth Maul has now been swapped out for Blue Lagoon The Loon. Characters frequently do things that are unbelievable, pushing believability to its limit (I understand you're being threatened by something unseen, but I need to get to a meeting, good night dear!). While everyone agrees that what frightens one person may not frighten another, the scares here are minimal, which isn’t helped by a weak script and unremarkable performers. It is certainly well-made, but familiarity leads to disappointment, and it's hoped that Wan’s return as director for The Conjuring 2 (where we revisit paranormal activity), will bring his horror series back on track. 5/10
