It’s possible that there haven’t actually been twenty-seven Conduit Demon movies, but watching this one certainly feels like it! Annabelle: Creation might have made for a genuinely strong horror movie if it had arrived a decade earlier; now, we're just walking over well-worn territory and depending on standard horror techniques to provide the scares. Those who experience discomfort related to fears of children, automatons, or dolls will likely find themselves quite disturbed, as the filmmakers really lean into those elements with effective results. However, once that particular aspect is removed, and the usual audio and visual horror conventions become predictable, you’re left wanting a truly frightening final section – something that unfortunately doesn't appear, because what follows feels like basic Conduit Demon storytelling. Among the good things are a clever connection to the true story of the Annabelle doll, the way the narrative presents itself as factual, and the acting, with Lulu Wilson again delivering a noteworthy performance as she appears from Ouija: Origin of Evil. The sound design is excellent, and the cinematography, full of shadows and subtle visual effects, makes for a technically proficient production. It’s disappointing that the writers didn't take more risks or show greater creativity. It’s certainly better than Annabelle (2014)—though that isn’t exactly a high bar—and it’s decent entertainment for viewers who enjoy horror movies with those specific anxieties. Serious horror fans, though, are probably going to be disappointed by the time the credits roll. 6.5/10
