It’s rare to find spy action movies made on smaller budgets that still work well, but Anna falls short despite having recognizable actors and a seasoned filmmaker at the helm. I went into this film excited by the idea of a female lead in the vein of John Wick, backed up by performers like Luke Evans, Helen Mirren, and Cillian Murphy. However, it simply isn't enjoyable to watch. A significant portion of the running time is devoted to exploring her cover story, relationships, emotional pain, and instances of deception, leaving very little room for actual espionage or action sequences. Although Anna had a theatrical release, its quality felt more akin to a low-budget film intended for streaming—a far cry from what one might anticipate with a larger production. I anticipated something better given that Luc Besson, the director of Leon, Nikita, and The Fifth Element, was involved. It's hard to believe that someone with his track record in this type of movie, along with such a strong supporting ensemble, could produce something so uninspired and forgettable.
