The film boasts gorgeous visuals; the photography—shot in Malaysia, not Thailand—is truly striking, and George Fenton’s music contributes to a refined atmosphere for this adaptation of the narrative concerning an English widow—portrayed by Jodie Foster—who accepts a role as governess to the children and wives of King Mongkut, played by Chow Yun-Fat. The storyline moves significantly away from the source material, evolving into a tender romance complicated by acts of betrayal among the King’s relatives. The main actors deliver understated and nuanced performances; although I felt Jodie Foster's accent sounded somewhat unnatural, Bill Stewart does well as the questionable British merchant "Mycroft Kincaid." Ultimately, it strays too much from what came before for my taste, but I would happily watch it again.
