Mark Strong isn’t unconvincing when playing villainous roles or supporting characters, however, as a central figure, he doesn’t quite measure up. He portrays "Washington" in this thriller centered on someone with the ability to access and resolve other people's memories. This particular “memory detective” is dealing with a past loss when he’s called to a grand estate to meet sixteen-year-old "Anna" (Taissa Farmiga), at the request of his boss, "Sebastian" (Brian Cox, who has very little screen time). Anna is a disturbed young woman whose parents are primarily worried about her refusal to eat. His task initially seems straightforward: simply talk with her, make her feel comfortable, and get her to take a bite of food. But it’s far from simple. As they begin talking, he starts to suspect that something terrible resides within her subconscious. Is she inherently evil or possibly being affected by someone else? The plot unfolds, drawing him into a complicated situation that challenges both his abilities and his own moral fiber. He finds it difficult to tell what's real versus imagined, not just in Anna’s mind either. While the premise is initially quite interesting, I found the way it was presented lacking. It feels like a rough draft, with insufficient effort put into developing the characters, and Strong has few tools to overcome that deficiency. The ending isn’t unexpected, and overall, I felt let down. It's acceptable enough for viewing, but I don’t anticipate recalling it in a week’s time.
