It’s an enjoyable film that I would happily watch again and suggest to others; it seems geared toward a younger crowd. The film is a strong illustration of how to create a family-friendly movie without being overly simplistic. It softens the more serious elements to appeal to children, while simultaneously adding layers of sophistication to the fantastical aspects for older viewers. The voice acting was superb; they assembled a cast full of well-known actors (which often backfires) and I didn’t even realize it, which is a testament to their skill – a good voice actor blends seamlessly into the character. The writing appeared solid, though predictable at times, but I would have liked a different setup for the villain. The movie focuses on the importance of family, whether by birth or through connection, and how wonderful it is to be united; however, Mr. Woodley and Horatio represent the antithesis of that idea, so while it makes sense from a narrative perspective, it didn’t quite resonate with me. A plot centered around collaboration to defeat an obstacle – perhaps a financial backer for the circus or another competing circus – would have been more appealing, but ultimately both storylines wrapped up as anticipated. It's not meant to be a profound film; it was definitely pleasant to relax and enjoy it for the most part.
