A celebrated adventurer ("Capt. Spaulding" – Groucho Marx) makes his way back from an African expedition and finds himself the guest of honor at a grand party. During this elegant gathering, a priceless painting disappears, prompting him and his companions, Harpo, Chico & Zeppo, to assist their hostess—the sophisticated yet practical "Mrs. Rittenhouse" (Margaret Dumont – who often seems unable to maintain composure amidst the chaos)—in retrieving it. The story swiftly moves into a succession of elaborate comedic scenes, including an exceptionally entertaining bridge game, punctuated by cleverly delivered jokes. I’ve always felt that Groucho's dialect could become somewhat grating—his very pronounced New York accent isn't entirely pleasant to listen to—but this is just a minor point about what is otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable film featuring four performers who clearly understood how to elicit laughter from an audience. There are perhaps a few too many musical interludes that interrupt the pace, but overall, it’s likely you will find much of it quite amusing.
