Upon joining an RAF airfield during the Battle of Britain, John Gregson is immediately nicknamed "Septic." The personnel stationed there are completely drained – worn out from the conflict, feeling both tired and apprehensive. They operate under the guidance of “Tiger” (played convincingly by Jack Hawkins), who employs a combination of encouragement and pressure to manage his pilots, many of whom are young men recently graduated from school or university. "Septic" shows initial enthusiasm, but it’s uncertain if he'll maintain that eagerness given the constant danger surrounding him and the loss of life. The film presents a surprisingly intricate narrative. Effective aerial shots and recognizable music underscore the precariousness of these men’s daily routines. A less common cinematic focus is placed on the support systems – not only for the pilots but also for logistics and coordination—revealing how crucial it was that all parts worked together to defend the nation against a powerful, numerically superior enemy. Michael Denison has a notably good part among the supporting cast of British actors, as does Dulcie Gray, who seems inseparable from the production. The ending deviates from typical expectations, perhaps even disappointing some viewers, but this contributes to a sense of realism within this skillfully constructed wartime story that deserves attention.
