Coming of age amidst the hardships of a rundown Southern trailer park with an immature, unmarried mother is the backdrop for this story. A resourceful and intelligent 16-year-old girl, AJ Michalka, experiences adolescence while residing in a trailer community situated on the grounds of a former drive-in theater in Central or West Texas. She finds comfort in what seems to be an imagined bond with a mystical cowboy, portrayed by Billy Burke, as she navigates the difficulties presented by her mother’s pursuit of men, played by Alicia Silverstone, and the issues faced by her younger brother, who has a connection with a Native American neighbor, Michael Spears. Released in 2014, this represents director William Robert Carey's sole directorial effort to date, adapted from his 2013 novel "Jesus in Cowboy Boots," which was initially the film’s title. It is an unusual, commonplace and realistic drama incorporating a single fantastical element; it shouldn't be mistaken for a comedy despite other descriptions. The movie shares similarities with films like “Michael” (1996), “Dreamland” (2006), “Don’t Come Knocking” (2005), “Mud” (2012) and “Joe” (2013). It possesses the fantasy aspect of “Michael,” echoes the desert trailer park setting found in "Dreamland," and captures the gritty, rural drama present in the other three films, alongside the independent artistic style seen in "Don’t Come Knocking." While it doesn't have the enjoyment or optimism of “Michael,” it is arguably comparable to those others, though distinct. Alicia Silverstone was a prominent actress in the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s, but her career has since diminished somewhat. The last film I recall seeing her in was "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" (2004). Here, at age 37 during filming, she portrays a 31-year-old woman who appears older and is anxious to find a partner before it’s too late. She had several children within the preceding decade, resulting in some noticeable weight gain; nevertheless, she remains attractive, simply with more life experience, as mentioned in the film. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 39 minutes and was filmed in Agua Dulce & Santa Clarita, California. GRADE: B-/C+
