John Chard on And Soon the Darkness

8/10 · Nov 20, 2013

Jane (played by Pamela Franklin) and Cathy (Michele Dotrice) are two nurses from Britain who decide to take a bicycle trip through the French countryside. After an argument, Jane leaves Cathy behind while she’s sunbathing in the grass. When Jane returns, Cathy is gone, and as she searches for her friend—now stranded in a foreign place where she doesn't speak the language—Jane quickly discovers herself in serious danger. The film’s name refers to the main character’s attempt to figure out and deal with an unsettling situation before nightfall. The entire movie takes place during daylight hours, features very few characters, and avoids long conversations. It might seem reasonable to assume that a film like this wouldn't be scary or exciting, but it is both. The feeling of being alone in the rural landscape creates a sense of unease, which combines with Jane’s isolation as an outsider to generate tense moments. Director Robert Fuest doesn't rush into building suspense; the first portion of the film moves at a slow pace. However, that patience pays off once the women argue and separate. Then Fuest begins introducing other people, and writers Brian Clemens and Terry Nation drop hints of troubling information about the region and its past. The mystery becomes intense—it’s possible for Jane to be threatened by anyone she encounters—and then things escalate into a state of anxiety and risk as everything is exposed in a burst of daylight horror. Reviews of the film have been very mixed, with some people finding it unpleasant or overly drawn out. However, it has a dedicated following, and it does succeed at keeping viewers on edge for those willing to commit their attention to it. I’d suggest watching it, but only if you're ready to stick with it through the first 45 minutes. It gets a 7/10 from me.
