The movie feels remarkably like the 1956 version starring Brynner and Bergman, except this one benefits from having one of Disney’s more memorable villains to add some unpleasantness and a sense of threat to what happens. After being rejected by the Russian Imperial family, Rasputin places a curse on them which leads to upheaval, killings, and general disorder. Not long after, a young girl wanders near an abandoned palace on a cold night and goes inside. It’s there she meets "Dimitri" and "Vladimir." The man develops an interest in the girl, and following some looks at the pictures on the walls, decides that she might be the Grand Duchess they need to get rich in Paris. She isn't enthusiastic about their scheme, but she is hungry, cold, and desperate, so she goes with them to France. There, a rigorous training program, a helpful connection with "Sophie," and some determination eventually put her before her would-be grandmother, the Dowager Empress. Will this older woman, who seems doubtful, be persuaded...? Meanwhile, the ghost of their former spiritual guide realizes that she might be about to restore the Romanovs’ wealth, so he gathers all his evil power to make sure the family is completely destroyed. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens created a score that's fairly strong, but the film’s rich appearance, some vibrant special effects (reminiscent of "Sleeping Beauty" from 1959), and a well-written story tell an enjoyable tale about how much influence love can have—even when there’s a very valuable diamond tiara involved.
