It's possible that watching the 1997 version of the story alongside "Quatch" might have helped me connect with this Sony reimagining; however, I’m still unsure if that would have made a difference. From the very beginning, it's clear there's a massive snake on the loose, and when recently let-go background actor “Griff” (Paul Rudd) suggests to his "Quatch" colleague, wedding videographer “Doug” (Jack Black), that he’s obtained the rights to remake “Anaconda”—minus Eric Stolz—they eagerly agree and head out with a few friends and just under ten thousand dollars. Even before they get underway on their boat, they become entangled in some local gold smuggling activity thanks to “Ana” (Daniela Melchior), and then another film crew appears unexpectedly. “Ana” proves to be quite the action hero, and soon there’s tension aboard the vessel; “Griff” storms off, and predictably, our scaled threat begins to reveal itself. When I mention scaly, it could refer to leathery skin or a creature that seems to fluctuate in size depending on the situation. At times it resembles "Godzilla," at others something more like "Godzooki"—essentially, it's a comedic menace seemingly pulled from the discarded scenes of “Jurassic Park.” Jack Black appears to be having fun as he wanders through the undergrowth, chewing on regurgitated squirrel, but that’s indicative of the comedy’s overall quality; there isn't much to laugh at, and by the film’s climax I was feeling restless. Maybe the intention was to satirize numerous elements from this type of movie? Rudd and Black have decent chemistry together, but they don’t have enough substance to work with as the storyline fades away in a disappointing fashion. It didn't truly seem like a story that deserved a second chance, and unfortunately, this somewhat demonstrates that point, though it does serve as passable holiday season entertainment—it just isn't anyone’s best effort, not even the snake’s.
