It’s enjoyable enough to revisit, and I can suggest it to others. I wasn't expecting this one to hold up so well after more than two decades, which is a positive thing because there aren't many films featuring giant snakes. The special effects are dated, but that’s made less of an issue by the setting on the Amazon River, where technology wouldn't function anyway. This film was released at a time when Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube were early in their acting careers (and I personally like seeing them act), and I don’t believe they contributed to what makes this movie flawed. Jon Voight proved to be the most perplexing element, if not outright disappointing. It seemed as though he might have been attempting a Spanish accent, although perhaps it was meant to represent Portuguese, which is spoken in Brazil; however, it remained unclear whether his character originated from that region. The character's own actions are also strange, fighting for survival against other people but showing no concern for his own safety when trying to capture the snake alive—apparently so he could…what? Breed with it? Owen Wilson, as usual, embodies the role of someone who causes problems and essentially sets off a chain reaction that leads the movie into chaos. The film is like “Mr. Toad's Wild Ride”—not good, even when it was first released, but still entertaining. The substandard computer graphics are balanced by some impressive physical effects; the real issue wasn’t the lack of a sense of danger from an overwhelming creature.
