Wuchak on An Unfinished Life

7/10 · Dec 10, 2025

The impact of straightforward truths can be jarring. Filming took place in the spring and early summer of 2003, but it wasn't seen until September of 2005 after a long period shelved. The screenplay came from Mark Spragg and his wife Virginia, and was later released as a book the following year. Their work combines elements of Redford’s “The Horse Whisperer” with “Of Mice and Men,” evoking something like Crooks' existence in the barn, alongside touches reminiscent of Jennifer Lopez’ "Enough." While it doesn’t reach the heights of “The Horse Whisperer” or “Of Mice and Men,” it’s still a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy films such as “A River Runs Through It” and “Legends of the Fall.” Redford was 66 years old during production, maintaining his characteristic physique and presence. Morgan Freeman also appeared at age 66. There are brief moments where some familiar political viewpoints surface in the conversations, but they're so short-lived that they don’t really detract from the experience. Beyond those minor instances, there are timeless lessons about life interwoven with occasional predictable plot developments. The film has a running time of one hour and 47 minutes and was filmed in British Columbia, specifically in Ashcroft, Savona, and Kamloops—all towns situated approximately four hours northeast of Vancouver on the far side of the Coast Mountains. GRADE: B/B-
