This film was enjoyable to watch. It possesses the level of quality I anticipate from the director of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which similarly depends on a strong narrative and capable performances. The acting across the board is exactly what's needed. A particular plus for me was that the young actress wasn’t portrayed as one of those clever, sassy characters you frequently encounter in sitcoms; her character feels genuine and occasionally offers insightful, believable remarks. For instance, her comment to her grandfather about an ex-boyfriend of her mother who only verbally abused her Mom resonated with me. The plot felt somewhat foreseeable at times, and the abusive boyfriend bordered on being a familiar trope. However, clichés and stereotypes exist because they reflect common realities, although the film might have benefitted from more originality in depicting this man. Nevertheless, it's a movie I would recommend seeing, even if it isn’t particularly memorable or something you’d want to watch again.
