Alastair Sim delivers a remarkable performance as the individual who informs the wealthy Birling family about the unfortunate death of a young woman. “Mr. Birling” (played by Arthur Young) then poses the question of how this connects to them. Over the course of more than seventy-five minutes, this character presents a carefully planned sequence of ideas that could imply any or all of the Birlings might have contributed to the tragic and isolated circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death. Rejected romance and charges of carelessness – primarily emotional rather than physical – and a lack of consideration seem easily attributable to them as “Poole” uncovers a family divided by conflicting principles and dishonesty. His straightforward and courteous questioning progressively brings hidden truths to light, details the family would have preferred to keep buried; however, are they the only ones concealing information? Is "Poole" genuinely who he presents himself to be? Guy Hamilton skillfully allows JB Priestley’s darkly humorous writing and the exceptional abilities of his lead actor to take precedence, drawing viewers into this intricate narrative. The production adheres closely to the original stage version, primarily taking place within a single room in their home, affording each member of the small cast an opportunity to feel uncomfortable under Poole's examination. It moves along at a good speed and showcases Sim’s considerable talent.
