The media followed Amy Winehouse’s life with intense interest, and when she died, many felt it was an inevitable outcome. The 2015 film _Amy_ recounts her story, beginning before she became famous, through her rise to stardom, and then detailing her descent into substance abuse. It's a somber and depressing documentary, and at times incredibly upsetting. I’ve heard someone jokingly describe it as the "best found footage horror movie of the year," and I understand why they said that. Because it’s made up of phone calls, interviews, and home videos, it feels very personal, and watching can almost feel like an invasion of privacy. While those home movies contribute to a disturbing atmosphere, they also help make everything seem authentic. I do think the film would have been improved with narration. It jumps around in time, with occasional flashbacks, and I believe a narrator could have provided more detail about what's happening on screen and offered some additional context. Without that guiding voice, it felt like something was absent. But that’s really just a small complaint. This is an unsettling documentary offering an unflinching look at the devastating consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. It isn't meant to celebrate Winehouse or her music; instead, it explores the darker aspects of show business. It’s worth watching, but be ready for a difficult experience.
