The fact that it's inspired by real events doesn’t change the fact that I found it overly silly and unbelievable. The plot revolves around "Berendsen" (Christian Bale), who is asked by his friend "Woodman" (John David Washington) to assist the recently widowed "Mrs. Meekins" (Taylor Swift). Her husband, a former American general, has died under mysterious circumstances. A questionable autopsy ensues, and shortly after that, someone is killed in a car accident. Our two protagonists find themselves being pursued by both the police and a shadowy organization. The questions are whether they can avoid capture and if we’ll ever learn what's really happening. David O. Russell chooses to narrate the story by jumping between different time periods, so we go back to a WWI hospital where the men are under the care of the somewhat mysterious nurse "Valerie" (Margot Robbie), who keeps the metal fragments removed from their injuries and fashions them into artwork. The three develop a strong connection before life separates them, only to be reunited unexpectedly as their present-day problem comes to a head. Visually, the film is impressive; the meticulous details, costumes, and music all complement each other well. However, I struggled with the storytelling itself. The plot feels too thin to carry the two hour and fifteen minute length, and once again, I found Robbie’s performance rather detached. It's impossible to fault Bale’s effort, but there was a noticeable absence of chemistry between the actors. This wasn’t helped by Rami Malek’s fairly lackluster portrayal of "Tom," her wealthy, peculiar, and clearly manipulative brother. Strangely, it reminded me of Agatha Christie – perhaps it would have been more effective with a smaller cast on stage where the characters' humor and eccentricities could have been better showcased. As it stands, though, the film wanders aimlessly, lacking direction, and I confess to feeling bored about halfway through.
