Amsterdam’s inconsistent rhythm and disjointed narrative failed to capitalize on what could have been something special, leaving me feeling impatient for it to conclude. The film begins with a lively, oddball mystery reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes or Knives Out, boasting an impressive cast where recognizable faces pop up throughout the movie. I was eager to see how things would unfold until the story abruptly paused for a lengthy flashback that didn’t significantly advance the plot. I anticipated the initial energy would return once the narrative resumed, but instead, a sense of danger and immediacy had been lost, replaced by seemingly random conversations and scenes that stretched on far too long. The film felt slow for nearly an hour before picking up speed again in the final portion. Amsterdam possessed considerable promise, yet it stumbled while trying to be different and playful. A highlight was Michael Shannon and Mike Myers as eccentric spies who kept me amused. Christian Bale delivered another strong performance, which was predictable. However, even with engaging characters, solid acting, and a captivating beginning and ending, Amsterdam mishandled its good qualities, making me feel tired and wishing I were already asleep.
