The new movie “Amsterdam,” featuring a large ensemble cast and directed by David O. Russell, arrives with a story largely rooted in actual events. After suffering injuries during World War I, Dr. Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) and Harold Woodman (John David Washington) return to New York only to discover a society where veterans aren’t as appreciated as they had hoped, and racial prejudice persists for Harold despite his service to the country. Burt, who lost an eye in the war, learns that his in-laws and wife essentially sent him overseas to remove him from their presence because of his mixed Catholic and Jewish background—a situation they found undesirable—as well as his dedication to helping veterans at his practice rather than catering to wealthier clients. When a wealthy socialite, Liz Meekins (Taylor Swift), asks Harold to look into what she believes is the murder of her father, Burt is consulted for medical confirmation. An unforeseen incident then leads to Burt and Harold being considered prime suspects, forcing them to uncover a way to clear their names from an increasingly complex mystery that reconnects them with Valerie (Margot Robbie), a former associate who treated them during the war. The prior romantic relationship between Harold and Valerie in Amsterdam after the war, along with Burt’s close friendship with both of them, adds further layers of complication. As issues pile up, the three must resolve the mystery and prevent tragedy or wrongful charges, contending with a continually expanding group of characters and potential suspects. The film's visuals are well done, successfully recreating the look and feel of New York in the 1930s, and the costumes contribute to an immersive experience. Bale gives a remarkable performance; it’s difficult to recognize him as he completely transforms into his character with a unique appearance, voice, and demeanor—a testament to his talent and versatility. The entire cast performs admirably, but what prevents the film from truly succeeding is its slow pace and occasional indulgence in storytelling. There's an intriguing concept, a talented cast, excellent acting, and impressive visuals, yet the movie feels drawn out without much attention paid to pacing, dramatic tension, or unexpected twists, ultimately making it a lengthy viewing experience that doesn’t quite deliver on its promise, especially considering the time commitment from audiences. Ultimately, “Amsterdam” provides entertainment and strong performances but lacks the necessary rhythm and resolution to make the journey entirely satisfying. 3.5 stars out of 5.
