It's difficult to ignore the connection between Francis Lee’s _Ammonite_ and Celine Sciamma’s _Portrait of a Lady on Fire_, especially since filming started before the latter film appeared but _Ammonite_ arrived afterward. Both movies share some characteristics: they unfold in isolated coastal settings, center around a same-sex romance, and are set in the past. Nevertheless, these commonalities don't extend much further. Where _Portrait of a Lady on Fire_ achieves a sense of elevation, _Ammonite_ feels less assured.
