American Ultra isn’t presented as a work of imagination; it draws its premise from the real-life MK Ultra program, where CIA psychiatrists reportedly utilized drugs and hypnosis in covert operations designed to create unwitting assassins. The details of MK Ultra came to light publicly in 1974 thanks to an investigative piece by Seymour Hersh published in The New York Times. As a film, it functions as an entertaining action comedy centered on government conspiracies, but beneath the humorous surface lies a depiction of how the MK Ultra program allegedly operated. It’s worth seeing. Viewers unfamiliar with MK Ultra might miss its deeper significance and simply perceive it as a bizarre comedic offering.
