Overcoming the obstacles can be demanding, but the rewards are immeasurable. Knowing how to navigate these difficulties and find a balance that allows both endeavors to flourish takes considerable skill, yet, as Matthew Heineman’s newest film so effectively shows, it's something achievable, despite the inevitable ups and downs. The movie chronicles an extraordinary year for musician/composer Jon Batiste and his wife, bestselling author Suleika Jaouad. In 2022, they encountered starkly contrasting experiences. Batiste, a musician with considerable talent and a broad catalog of work, was achieving significant milestones, including winning five Grammy Awards while serving as bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and working toward finishing an ambitious composition meant to capture the essence of American music, diversity, and culture, titled “American Symphony.” Simultaneously, Jaouad experienced a return of the cancer she had fought ten years prior—an illness documented in her writing that launched her career; now, after a decade of remission, she faced a second, potentially dangerous bone marrow transplant to treat it, along with an uncertain future.
