American Star proves to be a worthwhile exploration of a character's inner world, with significant credit going to Ian McShane’s skillfully restrained acting, a narrative full of meaningful ideas, and some strikingly beautiful scenery. The deliberate pacing helps create an absorbing experience centered on accepting responsibility for past actions, though the film does suffer from moments that feel somewhat foreseeable and includes one superfluous character which detracts from what would have been a more appropriate and emotionally satisfying conclusion. There are instances where its forward movement stalls, but in the end, the actors and filmmaking team manage to inspire thought about the complexities of right and wrong and the certainty of transformation.
