This film stands out as one of the most significant movies of the past two decades and has had a considerable effect on American filmmaking. It centers around an unstable, deranged, violent protagonist who is aware, from within herself, that she is a killer—a realization expressed through dialogue that reveals her character’s essence in her own words. Patrick Bateman was essentially someone attempting to inflict his pain onto others and seemed unable to perceive any hope for anyone's future. He didn’t express kindness toward anyone because he wanted to share his suffering with those around him, while remaining detached and desiring nothing more than animosity. These lines of dialogue at the beginning and end of the film served as a complete portrait of who she was. The director aimed to present audiences with an understanding of what Wall Street work involved and the types of people employed there during that era, emphasizing their preoccupation with maintaining appearances and projecting a false image through suits, glasses, and self-created business cards. Christian Bale’s performance was exceptional—the acting truly distinguished this project, alongside the music. The concept of pairing musical or romantic elements with a murderer proved to be quite original.
