American Pie 2 increases the amount of raunchy humor but diminishes the character development. A sex comedy can only be stretched so far before it veers into explicit pornography. The first American Pie, while an important film in its genre, was a satirical look at high school life by exaggerating the desire to lose one’s virginity. How would Rogers and Herz continue the story? Well, with scenes involving a trumpet being inserted bodily, using super-glue instead of lubricant during an awkward self-pleasure attempt, and an extended “lesbian” encounter. To put it simply, the misadventures of these four friends don't maintain the charm of the original. After their first year of college, the guys reunite for a party hosted by Stifler at a rented beach house, where they plan to spend the summer having sex and participating in embarrassing phone sex conversations (twice!). The cast returns, ready to awkwardly maneuver beds, endure unpleasant smells, and involve Stifler’s mother in a car ride (though there's no pie involved...). Yes, the scent of semen and intense hormones permeates the summer atmosphere. While that might be enough humor for fans of the first film, there’s no clever disguise of the story's structure. It’s a complete copy of its predecessor; almost identical! The characters repeat the same situations, only amplified by a writer who clearly struggled to come up with fresh material. It feels like an adult magazine—used once and quickly discarded. The prolonged and repetitive comedic scenes, though initially somewhat amusing, become tiresome because they never end. The “lesbians” convincing the guys to engage in physical contact with each other? That took up roughly thirty minutes of the film’s length, and as a gay man, it was difficult to watch. Hannigan deserves praise for improving her performance; she was genuinely funny, balancing comedic timing with endearing quirks. The rest of the cast members, except for Reid who seemed to be foreshadowing her ‘Sharknado’ career, performed consistently as expected—meaning they all reeked of mediocrity. I really don't want to see Klein touching himself while talking suggestively on a phone! The padding in his pants was excessive *starts to gag*. And the lack of basic math skills is baffling. Consider this simple arithmetic: if Kevin claims he slept with three girls, and the “Rule of 3” dictates you divide that number by three, how many did he actually sleep with? Take your time now...! Got it? The answer isn’t zero; it's one. Why are these college students stating the answer is zero? Are they serious? Fine, Vicky isn’t the brightest person around, but Kevin? Come on! Basic math! Of course, no American Pie film would be complete without an alternative rock soundtrack. Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day, and Alien Ant Farm all appear, adding to the teenage angst portrayed onscreen. It's disappointing that this sequel caused me unnecessary frustration over failing to match the original’s humor. If you loved the first film and appreciated its exaggerated satire, then this sequel will only be considered passable. If you just want crude jokes and are happy with lengthy phone sex scenes, feel free to give this second pie a try. It's not hot off the press, but it’s lukewarm at best.
