The story of the James/Younger gang is told again in this imaginative adventure certain to thrill those interested in historical accounts. It feels like a Western designed for younger audiences, with a group of energetic performers and frequent bursts of action. There’s plenty of style on display, some appealing romantic elements, and the main action set pieces are thrilling. However, it ultimately lacks depth, a feeling made worse by the poor musical score and soundtrack. The performances are decent; Timothy Dalton is good as Allan Pinkerton, the agent responsible for capturing Colin Farrell's Jesse James—a man who also seems to admire the outlaw—and Gabriel Macht brings a quiet confidence to his portrayal of Frank James. The rest of the cast appears to be enjoying themselves despite being limited by the writing. There are suggestions of deeper themes like the influence of fame and business corruption, but these don’t appear often because at its core this is simply an action film that functions on that basic level. 5/10
