Reno on American Honey

7/10 · Jan 14, 2017

This movie, from the director known for 'Fish Tank,' centers on another young woman facing hardship. Raised in poverty and experiencing abuse, she’s attempting to find a new direction in her life. It doesn't follow a predictable path of substance use or negative choices; instead, it tells the story of Star, a teenage girl who leaves home seeking independence and romance. The narrative kicks off when she encounters a young man at a grocery store, and subsequently follows him everywhere. The film largely focuses on a group of young people selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. They travel across the country, experiencing various forms of enjoyment along the way. To maintain her place within this group, Star feels pressured to demonstrate her value. She secures her position but operates according to her own methods. I worried that the story might take a darker turn at times. A few scenes hinted at that possibility, but ultimately avoided shifting the tone of the narrative. It seems the writer was interested in portraying a young woman pursuing two objectives simultaneously. After discovering that one of those goals was fabricated, she considers the careful construction of the other. Her future hangs in the balance, as she lacks the qualifications to pursue her own ambitions independently. I believe it’s a respectable film with a worthwhile message. If you're familiar with the director’s work, you likely know what themes her films explore. While different from 'Fish Tank,' this one features an American protagonist. It examines aspects of lifestyle and culture relevant to young people. The lead actress delivers a strong performance. Shia Labeouf appears in a supporting role and gives his best effort; it's not the focus of the film, though. Several other actors are recognizable, but their roles are smaller. My only criticism is its length—if you’re comfortable with a slower-paced drama, then the movie is enjoyable. 'American Honey' mirrors 'American Money,' representing one approach people take in pursuit of their version of the ‘American Dream.’ It's primarily geared toward fans of dramatic films. _7/10_
