What a terrific film! It really makes me want to seek out more of Jeffrey Wright’s work; he’s such an incredible performer. He's exceptional here, without question. That said, the other actors are also fantastic – Sterling K. Brown is wonderful, and Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Uggams both make a strong impression. The film evokes a wide spectrum of feelings, and it weaves humor into the story remarkably well—it’s funnier than I anticipated, particularly considering what occurs early on. That lightness is balanced by an underlying sadness that keeps surfacing. Regardless, everything flows together very smoothly onscreen. There was one scene in particular that genuinely moved me to tears, which doesn't happen often; as I’ve mentioned before, it’s a long story short: I tend to view movies as fictional and don’t usually connect with them on an emotional level. The scene involves Cliff (Brown) and Lorraine (Myra Lucretia Taylor). It was truly affecting! Occasionally a film manages to really get through to you! Maybe it's just something about me, but it’s still noteworthy. To give some perspective, the only other movie that has made me cry like this was 2014's *Two Days, One Night*, with an equally minor scene featuring Timur Magomedgadzhiev. 2022's *The Whale* came close too! Getting back to it... I’d heard good things about *American Fiction* when it initially released and thankfully it lived up to the praise; it was a shame that my schedule didn’t allow me to see it in theaters originally, but at least now I've added it to my list. It’s a truly worthwhile film!
