_**A vibrant portrayal of Mozart’s final years in Austria**_ In late 1700s Vienna, Antonio Salieri (played by F. Murray Abraham) is a skilled but unremarkable composer. He acknowledges the extraordinary talent of the younger Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), which sparks feelings of intense jealousy within him. The narrative unfolds as a recollection, with Salieri recounting his experiences to a priest many years later while residing in an institution. “Amadeus” (1984) is an enjoyable historical film that manages to transport viewers to Vienna between 1783 and 1791. Mozart was essentially the era’s equivalent of a rock star, and some of his energetic music even calls to mind aspects of contemporary rock music. The characters are given distinct personalities, which helps make the events feel real, and the use of flashbacks creates an engaging story. Elizabeth Berridge portrays Amadeus' charming and spirited wife, Constanze, while Christine Ebersole appears as a stunning opera singer, somewhat like Tina Root from Switchblade Symphony (though considerably taller). The original stage production emphasized character development with music serving as accompaniment; however, the film places a bit too much focus on this element. For those who aren’t dedicated fans of opera, the lengthy scenes featuring Mozart's and Salieri's operas being performed can become tedious and unnecessarily extend the movie, diminishing its impact. I found myself understanding why the Emperor appeared bored during a performance of “Figaro,” as much of the music sounds similar to me. Despite this, it’s an educational and entertaining biography covering Wolfgang’s last nine years; it's very well-made. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes and was filmed primarily in what is now the Czech Republic. GRADE: B+/A-
