Richmond is under siege, and with many Confederate soldiers going without food, Colonel Rossiter, portrayed by Richard Widmark, decides to seize a large cattle shipment typically delivered to the Union army by Mexican Kelly, played by William Holden. Convincing Kelly isn't easy; he’s not swayed by promises of money printed by Jefferson Davis. Complicating matters further, Major Stedman, commanding the surrounding Union forces with Patrick O’Neal in the role, anticipates a Confederate attempt to feed their troops and is ready to use his artillery to stop it. To succeed, Rossiter and Kelly must find a way to collaborate, perhaps even develop some trust between them. While the film doesn't generate much suspense, there's an undeniable spark of rapport between Widmark and Holden, and the action sequences are plentiful as they maneuver against each other and the digitally rendered cattle. It does feel stretched out; I felt it could easily be trimmed by fifteen minutes due to some wandering plot points and excessive talking, but ultimately it’s a passable film featuring two actors comfortably performing their roles.
