It’s like having one of those dreams where you’ve done something—you can’t quite place what or why—and there’s no way to revisit it. Alpha Dog presents a cinematic version of the actual Jesse James Hollywood/Nicholas Markowitz events that occurred in 2000. The movie follows young drug sellers, a group trying to be gangsters who are clearly not equipped for what they're doing. Their incredibly foolish choices lead to the tragic events at the heart of this story. Nick Cassavetes directed the film, and it’s clear he wanted to make something serious, but it doesn’t always manage to achieve its full dramatic potential. Still, after spending time with these lost young people—watching them act like they're living a constant party for much of the movie—the impact of the tragedy is powerful. The film leaves a mark, and Cassavetes’ stylistic choices (like split-screens and freeze frames) don’t take away from the starkness of what happens. There are some strong performances from a group of relatively new actors. It earns a 7/10.
